Medical missions & health education

Six times a year, we organize a one-week medical triage mission in Guatemala’s rural area. Usually, 2 to 4 volunteer medical professionals (doctors and nurses) from North America evaluate approximately 1000 individuals and identify over 150 surgical candidates.

Our local community managers inform and educate their communities through radio broadcasts, community meetings and personal contacts about surgical options by showing them our patient educational video.

The local community managers also participate in the Medical Missions and help with the translation, social-economic study and scheduling of the patients referred for surgery.

 Health education

Knowledge is the key to making informed decisions about one’s health. And lack of knowledge is symptomatic for Guatemala’s rural area. In that spirit, we devote significant resources to providing health education during our Medical Missions. Our patient educational video, showing the process of a surgical mission using patient testimonials, has been an effective tool to convince patients to come to the hospital and put them at ease.
