Centro de Salud Bárbara is a rural
clinic in San Juan Sacatepéquez, built and subsidized by the private
Guatemalan foundation Fundación Chusita Llerandi de Herrera.
Its mission is to provide medical care for rural Guatemalans and
to train medical students.
In 2007, collaboration was started between the Fundación
and Partner for Surgery to create surgical facility at the clinic.
In November 2008 the medical team Project HANDS inaugurated the
new facility with a surgical team consisting of volunteers from
both Canada and the United States. This facility is dedicated to
providing surgical care throughout the year for the most impoverished
peoples of Guatemala.
Adjacent to the clinic is a temporary housing facility, Albergue
San Gabriel, built by our local Guatemalan partner, Compañero
en Salud. The Albergue provides the food and housing needed by the
patients as they wait for their surgery and as they recover prior
to their trip back home.
